Ethiopia To Train 30,000 Workers For Textile, Garmet Factories

An agreement has been signed here to launch a major project to source, recruit and train 30,000 workers for textile and garment plants operating at the newly inaugurated Hawassa Industrial Park in Ethiopia’s Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region (Province).

The agreement was signed here Wednesday by the Trade and Industry Bureau of Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR), the Ethiopian Textile Industry Development Institute, and the Tenants’ Association representing the manufacturers operating at the industrial park.

The training will begin this September and is aimed at overcoming the current high labour turnover being experienced by factories through effective synchronisation of expectations between the new recruits and the factories.

It will also undertake a sourcing process-informing, registering, orienting and pre-selecting a total of 60,000 job seekers – 80 per cent of them expected to be women – in two and half years from potential recruitment areas in the state.

During the signing ceremony, the State Minister for Industry,Tadesse Haile, said the project was an excellent example of public-private partnerships to ensure smooth integration of new textile and apparel investments into the Hawassa industrial park which was inaugurated last week.

He said this programme is expected to make substantial contributions to the implementation of the initiative of building a state-of-the-art eco-industrial park in Hawassa, located some 285 kilometres south of Addis Ababa.

He added that the industries in Hawassa would have to be become efficient and competitive very quickly by shortening the learning curve to be successful in the global market. Best practice to be achieved under the programme would be replicated at other industrial parks in the country expected to become operational in the coming nine months, he added.

He urged all signatories and stakeholders to strive for the success of the project and its efficient implementation.
